It's a very inventive mystery with an absolutely top-of-the-line music track. The setting starts simple but gets very deep, and the characterization is very nice.
Its flaws are bad art and appalling pacing. Takes at least 2 hours (up to 4) till the story starts up, and even then the first EP has a rather slow pace throughout. EP2 has another slow intro, about 1 hour long, before it picks up and only then does the story finally goes into full gear (with the introduction of Red and clarification of rules).
However, possibly because it takes such a long time, the atmosphere is second to none and absolutely top-class. Umineko's atmosphere is by far its biggest selling point.
The mystery deepens quite quickly, especially if you're one to believe everything you're told. The trickiest parts is to work out if there's any truth in the quarry of lies laid out for you. For inventive minds, it's a goldmine of mystery. For people who don't want to think, then you can just believe magic exists!
Plus, everyone's dressed fancy.
