To VNfags: Is it related? spire 10/11/2009(Tue)04:12:23 No.362391    [Reply]
(Question regarding Umineko)So, basically, I noticed something during my 'Introduction to Linguistics' course: Basically, there are 4 Conversational maxims used in most languages nowadays:
-The maxim of relevance: Be relevant.
-The maxim of quality: Provide true/accurate information.
-The maxim of quantity: Do not make your contribution more or less informative than required.
-The maxim of manner: Avoid ambiguity; be brief and orderly.
Personally, I only know what is going on as far as ep.

I did read the Visual Novel, however the VN uses an existing document so I am looking at the document and trying to figure out what Commandment might be able to win the game, if any. Similarly, you can't expect to solve the epitaph without using at least some outside material.

Either way, in another response the the OP, in addition to the commandments, I would suggest a course in logic. Contra-positives, inverse, etc. The example of Hemple's Raven is actually a logic problem. Additionally, the Devil's Proof can be taken to be an If-Then statement, whereas If something is not declared in red truth, then the presume 2 p's true and 2 p's false, we can draw 4 conclusions. 1. That a presumption is true and the item exists. 2. That The presumption is true and the item does not exist. 3 and 4. That the presumption is false and is vacuously true. Thus without the red truth one could say "Eva was actually dancing the Hideyoshi, so she couldn't have left the room", Whether she actually was dancing with Hideyoshi or not, both result in a true statement. Thus any conclusion Battler makes that is not based off of Red Truth has the probilibilty of being right of 75%. Vacuous truth is still a devil's proof, and he might actually be correct as well, but there is the possibility of what he said was true, but also false such as btw, 4th VN spoiler, "Everyone recognized Kinzo, but perhaps one of them took on his name!" This passes the P test of Everyone Recognized Kinzo, but this did not happen because Kinzo is dead. Mind you this is only very basic logic, if one were to complete a course in it, the VN would be much easier to solve.

>Similarly, you can't expect to solve the epitaph without using at least some outside material.

It's implied in EP3 that the epitaph is a kanji riddle, meaning you'd have to add or take away kanji and replace similar-looking ones too.

Basically impossible from an english perspective. I doubt the answer to it is going to be revealed until EP8.

>Everyone Recognized Kinzo, but this did not happen because Kinzo is dead.

She actually never said anything about them recognizing him being alive. Only that they recognized the existence of Kinzo.

This week's episode discussion: Maria has a nice :3 face. Oh, and I am disappoint at how DEEN changed the structure of the Ange scenes. I think it may confuse the anime watchers.

I still have not touched Umineko and I don't know why. Can someone explain to me why it is so good and why I should pick it up. I'd like to do something with it before it passes me over and I forget about it.
